Clear Water in your pond adds
to the enjoyment of your pond. You can see you fish
and plants better, and you will know immediately if
there are problems. Follow these steps to help ensure
that your pond water stays clear.
| Maintain low amounts of dissolved
organic matter |
Filth in the pond feeds
algae and fouls water quality.
- Remove debris from the pond with a skimmer
net if necessary.
- Remove dead (not dying) aquatic plant matter.
- Keep fish feeding to a minimum (1 -2 times
per week).
- Use a good biological filter to breakdown
the rest.
|
| Good water circulation is crucial |
Good
circulation ensures lots of oxygen which aerobic
bacteria (the good kind) need. Plus, stagnant
water gets scummy and stinky.
- Make sure the pump circulates all the pond
water at least once an hour.
- Make sure the circulation is from one end
of the pond to the other.
|
| Do not overstock the pond with
fish |
Lots
of fish make lots of fish waste, maintaining
low amounts of dissolved organic matter is
crucial.
- Keep to one inch of goldfish per ten gallons
or less (consider the full-grown length).
- Remove new spring fry as necessary.
|
| Maintain 60-70% plant coverage
on the surface of the pond |
Lots of plants keeps the
water clear in two ways.
- By blocking sunlight, so that algae cannot
grow.
- By absorbing nutrients that would otherwise
feed algae.
