Here is a list of questions that
we commonly get at the initial estimate consultation
for a new pond. If you are looking to have a pond installed,
or to build it yourself, Have a look at these common
questions by new pond owners:
Where do we put a pond?
If you don't have a spot already, we are happy to
suggest the most suitable locations, based on sunlight,
tree cover, and water runoff.
Is sunlight necessary?
Ponds can be built in a variety of locations from
shaded woods to bright open fields. The amount of
sunlight will affect the selection of aquatic plants.
Can a pond attract mosquitoes or
undesirable wildlife?
Mosquitoes are non-existent in our ponds. The fish
eat the larvae and the circulation of the water makes
it difficult for mosquitoes to lay eggs.
How do we choose a shape?
We make our suggestions based on aesthetics as
well as erosion and other practical concerns. Often,
during the consultation we use a garden hose to lay
out the shape until we get it just right.
How long does it take to install
a pond?
Anywhere from one to five days, depending on weather,
the size of the pond, and other factors.
Do we need to run utilities out
to the pond area?
A pond only requires a regular grounded outlet,
installed by a licensed insured electrician after
the pond is built. This is to run the pump, the filter
and any lights.
Does the pump and filter stay on
all year round?
This depends on the severity of the weather. In
a mild winter, a pump can operate safely all winter.
However if it is very icy, the pump may need to be
turned off and sometimes brought inside.
How much will it cost me in time
and money to keep a pond?
Most people spend less than $20 per month on food,
water and electricity, and about 5-10 minutes a week
in the warm months on maintenance. Installing a Pond
Skimmer can reduce the amount of maintenance
even further. We suggest two major cleanings a year.
See Spring and Fall cleanings.
